In your own words, describe the difference between a keyword search and a subject heading search.
well, the keyword search is a search where it searches for the key words i type in the search bar. Or in order words, it highlighted the key words/phrases I'm looking for and search for them. That's why the search results is more broad. The subject heading search is more precise because it eliminates the broad searches so there less results. I guess it searches for the key words/phrases AND the subject of the search as well. That's why the searches are more helpful.

No, it doesn't search keywordsd/phrases and subject. It just searches subject headings. Here's how it works:
ReplyDelete1. there are a pre-set, prescribed set of subject headings. You can look at them in the 5 volume set at the reference desk. I told you about this in this week's work and you might want to look at them the next time you're in the library. Ask at the reference desk and they'll show them to you.
2. A human being, a librarian, reads a book and assigns one or more of those specific headings. Because various librarians read various books, having the pre-set headings makes sure that every single book on a particular subject gets the same heading--exactly.
That's why the books sit together on the shelves and also come back in the results set of a subject heading search.
Keywords are simply machine matches of what you enter and the characters in the record.
They are not overlapping searches. They are totally separate searches.
